Starhead’s Diva anthology series began in 1993, and featured stories from such cutting-edge female artists as Fiona Smyth, Dame Darcy, and Ellen Fornay (Tomato). Many of them would later have their work featured in the excellent Twisted Sisters series from Kitchen Sink Press.

Diva is remarkable for the huge range of artistic styles it covers. Smyth, for instance, works in large panels of hallucinogenic dream imagery; Darcy borrows lithographic stylings to bring to life pieces like “Anorexia is Female Castration”; Forney contributes her lesbian sensibility to a traditional format story. Although its editorial direction wanders, Diva is still a good introduction to the wilder side of women’s comics.
