In the distant future, humans survive in isolated tribes on ancient sea vessels and enormous wrecked constructs long after the continents have been submerged under an ocean of liquid quicksand. Called the Sakai, this “sand sea” is inhabited by sentient monsters and man-swallowing behemoths that spunky prodigal daughter Zizi is uniquely suited to hunt and kill. Following an unwitting transgression, Zizi, on the cusp of adulthood, is forced into exile and takes up with a band of amoral pirates led by a captain who is reluctant to have a girl on board his ship. Zizi quickly proves she is far more than just a girl and embarks on a voyage of self-discovery with the ambivalent crew.
