Marines Attack

Sam Glanzman, a naval veteran of World War II, brings the perspective of his unique experience and colorful personality to every panel he draws. In the late 60s and 70s, he developed into one of the most reliably enjoyable artists of war and Western comics (mostly for DC), even as those genres were in their dying days. The spark of his talent was obvious even in such a thoroughly undistinguished title as Marines Attack, one of seemingly hundreds of standard-issue war comics brought out by second-tier publishers in the 50s and 60s. Unfortunately, the combination of Glanzman’s professional inexperience and the Charlton assembly-line production process put this work squarely in the “diamond in the rough” category. By the time he was tapped for the relatively successful “Private War of Willy Schultz” in Fightin’ Army, his chops had matured considerably from this primitive early effort.
