Lord Valentine, Pontifex of all Majipoor, travels to the ruins of Velalisier, the ancient capital city of the planet’s indigenous shapeshifters, to solve the mystery of a ritualistic murder—a crime so rare it is almost as much a novelty as the legends of the long–dead city.

However, he finds his investigation hampered by racial tensions, political intrigue, religious interference, and the bloody history of the city itself, full of legends and myths that still threaten to topple the planet’s delicate socio–political system.

This short story, presented here in full text format with illustrations by Anders Finer, originally appeared in the science fiction and fantasy anthology Legends, which was edited by Silverberg and featured stories by other popular authors such as Ursula LeGuin, Terry Goodkind, George R.R. Martin, Orson Scott Card, and others. Silverberg has also written several novels about Majipoor and the character of Lord Valentine.
