Philbert Desanex’ Dreams
(Rip Off, 1993)
™ and ©1993 Gilbert Shelton
Philbert Desanex is the alter ego of Wonder Wart-Hog. However that fact is largely immaterial in this reprint volume containing four short episodes and one epic story concerning Desanex’ dreams.
Written and drawn by Gilbert Shelton (The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers), this rambling tale has a definite dream-like quality as scenes and events meld together and become increasingly bizarre with no logical progression. At one point Philbert is confronted for not wearing a uniform but finds he can only respond with profanities. He simply walks away from an outrageous trial and escapes to the home he lived in as a teenager. There he finds everything exactly the same, even extending to the girl next door who he had a crush on. He and the formerly unrequited love of his life drive to French Guiana where they find an Eiffel Tower made of bamboo. Eventually Philbert , as leader of Russia, provokes a nuclear war.
— George Haberberger
