Released into relative obscurity in 1989, Cry for Dawn became the cause célèbre of comic fans in the mid-1990s. Joseph Michael Linsner’s Dawn first appeared in this horror anthology, and was destined to become one of the most famous of the “bad girl” characters when that craze took off.

What’s surprising to most is that the red-haired, scantily clad, title character appears only peripherally in this anthology. She’s less than a host to the series—really more a recurring image. What makes the title really memorable are the visceral stories by Joe Monks and other writers, with finely rendered artwork by Linsner. No urban horror is too creepy for them, and they are masters at molding fantasies of sex and death into a horrifying whole.
