War Heroes (Charlton)

The combination of “Charlton” and “war comic” does not bode well for fans of quality graphic storytelling, but somehow War Heroes manages to make a presentable contribution to the genre. Artist Nicholas Alascia borrows extensively from DC’s resident war comics master Joe Kubert (Sgt. Rock and just about every other DC war comic), but if you’re going to swipe, it pays to swipe from the best. The Kubert-style rendering adds needed class to the usual assortment of World War II, Korean and Vietnam-era tales of heroism and slaughter. Sam Glanzman, another of war comics’ most talented illustrators, chips in a story or two toward the end of the run as well.
