Nightfall: The Black Chronicles

Man shares the City of New Orleans with monsters. That’s bad enough, but what’s worse is that the monsters are set up like crime families, so people have to worry about not only the monsters themselves but also getting caught in the middle of a clan war. The city’s ruling Church finally establishes a kind of peace—but not all the monsters subscribe to it. That’s where the Nightwatch comes in: a kind of police force set up to keep the monsters in line. Of course, this police force requires officers with special talents, so demons, wisecracking skeletons, and guys with crucifixes burned into their hand are fairly common. And when the Nightwatch’s prodigal son, Proteus, returns with a chip on his shoulder (among other features), all hell just might break loose.

Published by Homage Comics, you might think you’re reading a Vertigo book, so dark and spooky is this series. Written with a sharp wit by Ford Lyle Gilmore and drawn in an inky, Mignola-esque style by Tomm Coker.
