Herbie (A+)

This black-and-white series reprints the early adventures of Ogden Whitney’s comics oddity, Herbie. The balloon-shaped title character appears to be a somewhat apathetic, lollipop-obsessed loser. In truth, he’s a somewhat apathetic, lollipop-obsessed super-hero (“The Fat Fury!”) who can perform a variety of superhuman tasks.

He has no ego so he is not disturbed by his father, who continually insults him because of his weight. In an effort to fight crime, Herbie takes up the identity of the costumed hero, the Fat Fury. It is a terribly funny costume made up of long underwear, a ski mask, a towel, and a plunger. As the Fat Fury, Herbie battles the forces of evil, all the while sucking on his ever-present lollipop.

A+ Comics premiered “Herbie” in 1990.
