Violent Cases

©1987, 1991 Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean

A man tugged on the arm of his recalcitrant son in an effort to get him to bed. The boy pulled the other way, and something gave—the boy’s arm. The next day, the father brought the son to a doctor to have the arm looked at. As it turns out, the doctor used to be Al Capone’s osteopath. He tells the boy of gangsters and roses…machine guns carried in violent cases…

Dave McKean has grown as famous for his moody, somewhat abstract painting on works including Batman: Arkham Asylum. Neil Gaiman reached stardom with his writing on series such as Sandman and Death: The High Cost of Living. Violent Cases brought the pair together for the first time back in the mid 1980s. Its original publisher went out of business before this work saw light, but another publisher was found, and Violent Cases now marks the start of one of the more exciting collaborations in modern comics.
