Pakkins’ Land

Narnia and Middle–Earth were probably the quarries where Gary and Rhoda Shipman mined the stones that pave Pakkins’ Land’s hidden pathways. When a wrong turn takes a boy from a day’s hike to an epic quest, he’s grateful to find plenty of talking animals to guide his way, though most of them are preoccupied with the return of their fabled king, a man known as Pakkins (also the name of the old man who owns the forest back in the mundane world). With the potential to become a good childrens’ title, Pakkins Land needs a little more characterization of its earnest hero, and to let the pictures carry the story. At times it reads very much like a prose tale that happens to be illustrated at every third sentence. Still, it’s not a bad way to introduce kids to the interplay between words and pictures in comic books.
