The Book of Little Independent Publishers was created—apparently with some backing by Diamond Distributors—to make a “blip” on the radar screens of readers. It’s an earnest effort to showcase the talent and characters of several independent comics creators. Weighing in at 76 pages cover to cover, and with a cover price of only U.S.$1.25, the book was an attractive lure when it was published in 1998. Notable features in this sampler include Steve Conley’s Astounding Space Thrills, Craig Taillefer’s Wahoo Morris, M’Oak’s Thieves and Kings, Darklight, a series by Teri Sue Wood (Wandering Star) and a dozen other short features, including a short piece by that giant among little independents, Dave Sim (Cerebus). Although many of the features are about what you’d expect from low-budget amateurs, there are also just as many diamonds in the rough.
