Heaven Sent

There is American manga; and then there is American manga that blatantly tries to imitate popular Japanese property. Calling Heaven Sent an Oh My Goddess! wanna–be is not an insult, because it is an obvious knock–off of Yosuke Fujishima’s romantic comedy, from its clean, simple artwork to its celestial premise and innocuous fan service. Instead of Keiichi from Oh My Goddess!, we now have Kyle, a lovesick but shy teen whose life is torn in two when his mother becomes one of the victims of the 9/11 tragedy. Four years later, Kyle himself is killed: run over by a car while trying to talk to his grade–school crush. Kyle is greeted by the Angel of Death, who is actually a longhaired beauty named Samantha. As it turns out, Kyle isn’t supposed to die yet and he is returned to Earth accompanied by a new guardian to watch over him.
