Extinct!

New England Comics’ Extinct! masquerades as a humor book, reprinting some of the most outrageous and obscure comics of the Golden Age. Certainly stories like “Invasion of the Love Robots” from Ziff-Davis’ Amazing Adventures #4 and “Spurs Jackson and his Space Vigilantes Battle the Red Menace Beyond the Moon” from Space Western #43 seem preposterous to today’s comic reader.

Still, Extinct! seems more like a loving encyclopedia of the comics from this bygone age. It includes all sorts of trivia and background on the books, as well as original ads for mail-order gas masks and “Jet Rocket” space ships. Other features such as “Your Comics Code in Action” show graphically how original art was censored or redrawn in order to fit within the confines of the then-new Comics Code. This series makes the books of that era come alive in a way that few other encyclopedias or documentaries have ever done.
