This one-shot comic is the pivotal chapter in the Avengers storyline “The Crossing.” In it, Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, sends the Avengers back in time to recruit the help of a younger version of himself in battling Kang the Conqueror and his Anachronauts. At the conclusion of this storyline, it would be the younger, less jaded Tony Stark who assumes the mantle of today’s Iron Man.
The fun part to this book is that the Avengers have traveled to a time just preceding the start of the “Marvel Universe.” As a result, readers get to see some of the more popular characters before their lives were changed and they took up hero identities. A young Peter Parker is shown as he walks with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Sue Richards and Ben Grimm are shown as they make their way to the fateful meeting that gave birth to Reed’s experimental rocket. Matt Murdock comes into contact with the Vision and Tony Stark is only nineteen years old.
