In 1987, Fantagraphics Books began publishing Prime Cuts under the direction of Gary Groth, editor of The Comics Journal. This black and white, magazine-format anthology presents work by some of the finest comic talent including R. Crumb, Eddie Campbell, Peter Kuper, Alex Toth, Joe Sacco, William Messner-Loeb, and an astounding list of others. This eclectic series features everything from comics to newspaper strip reprints to prose fiction. Such creators as Jack Cole and Russ Johnson appear alongside prose by Herman Hesse and spectacular comic adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft and Franz Kafka. Prime Cuts provides a terrific overview of some of the greatest accomplishments in comics outside the mainstream.
