Challengers of the Fantastic

 COTF   (Amalgam, 1997)

™ and ©1997 DC Comics and Marvel Characters, Inc.

The Amalgam experiment in 1996 proved so successful that Marvel and DC undertook another batch of titles in 1997 featuring character conglomerations, but decided to forego any contrivance to account for the presence of these titles, like the 4-issue mini-series Marvel Versus DC/DC Versus Marvel of the previous year.

There has long been speculation that the Fantastic Four was inspired by artist Jack Kirby’s previous work on the Challengers of the Unknown, so the two titles were a natural for this Amalgam pairing. Challengers of the Fantastic featured the notion of “living on borrowed time” from the Challengers and paired it with the close-knit “family of adventurers” aspect of the Fantastic Four. This title was supervised by Marvel and is more heavily influenced by the Fantastic Four than the Challengers. The story featured the group battling the world devourer, Galactiac, which mirrored the FF’s encounter with Galactus.
