Based on the post-Star Wars TV series, Battlestar Galactica was launched in Marvel Super Special #8, with the TV pilot adapted by Ernie Colon. The subsequent ongoing title was a cut above your average tie-in comic, thanks mainly to Walt Simonson’s regular appearances as penciler. Although his blocky style didn’t produce the greatest likenesses he was well suited to drawing the dog-fights, and there were plenty of them in issues #4, 5, 11–13, 15–20 and 23. The last remnants of space-faring humanity are fleeing across galaxies, hotly pursued by the evil robot-like Cylons. Their mission: to find the legendary home of mankind without leading the Cylons there to massacre whomever they may find. Their motley fleet of small craft is protected by the Galactica, which is crewed by the usual bunch of white-toothed young people, crusty old blokes, cute kids with pageboy haircuts, and comedy aliens.

Louise Simonson’s scripts brought a heartwarming touch to the book without getting as mawkish as the series itself. She developed the characters well. As in the TV series, most adventures centered around staid but sexy pilot Apollo (who just happened to be the son of Adama, the Battlestar’s commander), his spunky sister Athena and his devil-may-care best buddy, Starbuck, a gambling womanizer with a cheeky grin. There was more space to develop the struggle for power between the military Battlestar and the secular Grand Council, although this was used chiefly to generate plot ideas. ~FJ
