In 1988, DC Comics commissioned Dan Jurgens to retool the age-old science-fiction story of Flash Gordon. Jurgens delivered in style as he wrote and penciled the nine-part maxi-series.

In Jurgens’ version, Flash Gordon has switched from being a football hero to a basketball star. He’s a reckless individual who, while driving too fast, overturned his expensive sports car. This incident led to his arrival at the home of Dr. Hans Zarkov, a scientist of questionable ethics, while he is in the process of being interviewed by lovely reporter Dale Arden. Gordon, asked to use the phone, but had a gun shoved in his face instead. Zarkov ordered Arden and Gordon into a spacecraft that the Doctor claimed is set to travel to another planet. The ship does just that. So began the adventures of the newly revamped hero. As always, Ming the Merciless, a ruthless, world-conquering alien, is the main villain.
