Power Rangers Ninja Storm: Thunder Strangers Cine-Manga

This incarnation of the Mighty ‘Morphin Power Rangers features three Wind Rangers: Shane, The Red Ranger, Wind of the Stars; Tori, the Blue Ranger, Wind of the Water; and Dustin, the Yellow Ranger, Wind of the Earth. Once again the concept is a mixture of martial arts and Transformers relying on over–the–top, wise–cracking villains who seem to have missed their calling as stand–up comics.

This digest–sized book is one from Toykopop’s Cine-Manga series, which the majority of comic fans will recognize as a fumetti book. These books combine screen images from television shows and movies with word balloons and typeset sound–effects to generate an amalgam of words and pictures that can be described like comics but in fact are quite different. The use of photographs limits the storytelling possibilities to what can be actually staged rather than to what an artist's imagination can render. On film the figures move, but isolating a single frame displays only a static frozen moment which rarely flows seamlessly to the next panel.
