Disney’s Enchanting Stories

 DIEA   (Acclaim, 1997)

This digest series from Acclaim features new stories starring Disney’s most popular movie characters.

In this second issue, the young Pocahontas meets the aging son of the legendary explorer Ponce de Leon. Like his father, Poncito also searches for the key to eternal youth. A series of misunderstandings involving a local river ends up threatening the signing of a long-awaited peace treaty, but Pocahontas, with the help of her animal friends, eventually sorts everything out. Although the River of Youth can’t stop the aging process, it does teach Poncito a much-needed lesson about friendship and love.

In the Beauty in the Beast issue, the relationship between Lumiere and Cogsworth takes a new turn as each tries to solve the mystery of the theft of the Beast’s favorite book. The “boys” detective work leaves a lot to be desired as they overlook the obvious clues and reach the wrong conclusions. Actually, the non-adventures of the Detective Duo are very funny when they interact with everything else in the castle especially Lumiere’s amorous advances to the appealing Feather Duster. Additional insight into the relationships of the castle characters would be gained by watching the animated movie. In the context of the movie, this story occurs after Belle has gained the Beast’s trust and the Beast has been refining his manners.

The fourth issue features 101 Dalmations. The puppies’ biggest hero is Thunderbolt, a dog that has its own TV show. And guess who will be making a personal appearance in London? Pongo knows the group is too large and decides to personally talk with Thunderbolt. However, Lucky and Freckles plan to see “the greatest dog in the world” on their own. Little do they realize the best-laid plans of mice and puppies will go wrong. By the end of their hectic day, Lucky and Freckles know exactly who is “the greatest dog in the world.” For those of us old enough to remember the original animated movie, the writers have chosen it as the basis for this title instead of the live action movie.

This digest also features stories about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Hercules.
