Doofus

 DOOD   (Fantagraphics, 1994, 1997)

™ and ©1994 Rick Altergott

(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

Familiar to readers of Hate, where the feature ran as a backup from #21, this is a 1990s mini-comic made good. Doofus and his croney Henry Hotchkiss are small town ne’er-do-wells. They’re ugly, they’re stupid, and they probably smell, too. Author Rick Altergott treats us to choice episodes from these painfully embarrassing jerks’ lives, and the result is hilarious. Doofus is a non-hip salute to 1990s slacker culture, steering clear of anything that might vaguely resemble wholesomeness or a positive role model. The comic is also well-rooted in underground comics through its creator’s devotion to EC artist and sometime pornographer Wally Wood. An acquired taste but heartily recommended. ~SW
