Shrugged: Beginnings

Angels and demons are nothing new to comics. (“Angels and Demons”? Sounds like a good name for a novel.) What’s novel here is that Dev and Ange sit on the shoulders of a teen named Theo and whisper in his ear about the decisions in his life. And perhaps they can manifest more directly than they originally thought.

What’s interesting is that Dev (from Nefario) and Ange (from Elysia) are not as one-dimensional as readers might expect. Dev doesn’t advise Theo to steal, and Ange is not pushing him toward sainthood. Both share their perspective with Theo, and we’re apt to find Dev’s as good as Ange’s at least half the time.

Theo is a real Everyteen. He’s a good student, a bit of a geek, but he’s trying to be cool and he’s not above the occasional smart comment. With Dev and Ange advising him, he’s bound to turn out OK. But there’s a joker in the deck in the form of The What If Mafia.
