Beyond the Beyond

Reads left to right; b&w.

Futaba leaves his ordinary teen life behind, when he meets Kiara, a flower-like magical girl who can access her incredible powers when linked with her “master.” To search for him, the two travel to a fantasy world where they gain the “help” of a Digimon-type creature called Belbel and the company of the strange Prince Virid.

The plot is familiar enough, but there are just enough innovations here to keep things interesting. Instead of being just an annoyingly cute critter, Belbel is Lady Belebel, a mercenary wizard with a high opinion of herself. And Virid, who’s destined to fight his own twin brother to the death for the throne of their country, is mad, bad, and dangerous to know. That is, until Futaba performs a thoughtless act of kindness and Virid becomes his (sometimes too-) constant companion.

I always become a little nervous when a manga takes slavery (no matter how fantastically it’s depicted) lightly, but otherwise, from start to finish, this is a delightful and original adventure.
