Black Panther by Jack Kirby
™ and © 1978, 1979, 2006 Marvel Characters, Inc.
This volume collects issues #8 through #13 of The Black Panther written, drawn and edited by Jack Kirby in 1978-1979. This series began in 1977 after Jack Kirby returned to Marvel after his stint at DC in the first half the of the decade. Kirby’s writing was much like his art, which was anything but subtle.
Outrageous situations, incredible characters and bombastic dialogue that were hallmarks of the Kirby style. This was a stunning change from the kind of multi-layered portrayal Don McGregor brought to the character in the previous series published in Jungle Action. In the stories collected here, the Black Panther battles Jakkara, a vibranium-altered monster, whileas in Jungle Action, the Panther confronted the Ku Klux Klan. Such an abrupt change in direction was jarring to the readers who had been fans of the Panther from his previous incarnation.Issue #13 was the end of the series, which was in fact finished by Jim Shooter, Ed Hannigan and Jerry Bingham.
