As editor Ivan Brunetti explains: “With this anthology, I seek to offer a vibrant sampling of the vital, highly personal work that is currently being produced in contemporary ‘art comics,’ along with a few classic comic strips and other historical material that have retained a ‘modern’ sensibility accessible to today’s readers.” He has limited the book to mostly North American artists for the sake of brevity.

The book is structured in a way that is not chronological, but meant to flow with a sense of evolution or growth. Beginning with shorts of a more comical nature, the book moves to longer stories with more “mature” or personal themes. In order to showcase some of independent comics’ best work, selections must be taken out of larger graphic novels, which does not work as well as the short stories.

While some deserving artists have been left out and better stories could have been selected for some artists, it is a great collection and is perfect for an alternative comics fan or someone who wants to be exposed to more independent artists.
