Iron Lantern

 IROL   (Amalgam, 1997)

ô and ©1997 DC Comics and Marvel Characters, Inc.

This title from DC and Marvelís Amalgam partnership combines elements of Iron Man and Green Lantern. Iron Lantern is Hal Stark, millionaire owner of Stark Aircraft, who inherited an alien power battery and uses it to propel a suit of armor. He is in love with Pepper Ferris, test pilot, who also becomes his nemesis, Madame Sapphire. The novelty of melding characters and elements from each title is what drives the Amalgam experiment.

This book was written by Kurt Busiek (Untold Tales of Spider-Man, Astro City) a writer well-known for his appreciation of the Silver Age of comics and its characters. Itís notable the Lanternís civilian identity is a man named Hal, and a potential villain plotting to replace him is named Kyle. After all, Kyle Rayner replaced Hal Jordan as Green Lantern. And although Rayner is not a villain, long-time fans of Hal Jordan do not believe Kyle deserves the ring.
