Oh My Goth

The Goth movement, in which young people dress in black, listen to depressing music, and generally attempt to be pessimistic about life, takes a little gentle ribbing from one of its own in this title. Voltaire, who began this book to promote his music, commits what is probably the ultimate sin in the Goth lifestyle: he doesn’t take it seriously. For instance, a Goth musician describes himself thus: “I am Vlad the Impaler. I am 200 years old. I lurk in my dark lair where I seek the blood of hapless victims.” But when aliens can’t understand him and subject his speech to their Universal Translator it comes out: “I am Bernie Weinstein. I am 17 1/2 years old. I live in my mother’s basement where I drink cheap red wine, when I can get it.”

Unfortunately, while Voltaire’s use of an Old English typeface for lettering may be appropriate, it is hard to read in large doses.
