Violet Rose

 VIOR   (Bluewater, 2007)

™ and © Darren G. Davis

Here’s what Violet Rose has going for it: intelligent, all-ages fun, an intriguing over-arc, and expressive, appealingly drawn characters. Here’s where it’s hampered; since Violet’s power is to speak to inanimate objects, it becomes a challenge to keep the mystery from unraveling in eight seconds. Everything she consults is only a partial witness, either through circumstance or deliberately cryptic answers. What unlocks the case is not Violet’s special abilities, but blind luck. Also, as solid as Brian Hess’ figures are, they’d benefit from a different inker and colorist to really make them pop. But the book is definitely worth keeping an eye on.
