The Batman Adventures: Mad Love

 BJF0   (DC, 1994)

™ and ©1994 DC Comics, Inc.

The Joker plays a winning hand at Arkham Asylum when he tricks his new psychologist, Harleen (“Harley”) Quinzel, into feeling sympathetic for him. Quinzel, a would–be pop psychologist with a flawed past of her own, falls madly in love with the Clown Price of Crime. After the object of her affections escapes the asylum and Batman returns him—badly scathed—she springs him herself, having donned a clown costume herself and calling herself Harley Quinn (“Harlequin“).

Harley becomes the Joker’s ill–regarded partner in crime, with a fantasy is of living happily ever after with the clownish madman. Instead, she ends up in a pop psychology nightmare. She’s in a dysfunctional relationship filled with betrayal, spousal abuse, fragile egos and denial—and even Batman can’t rescue her from her own mind.
