RAKA   (AK, 2003)

™ and © AK Comics

One of the many pleasant discoveries I made at the recent San Diego Comic-Con was AK Comics, a company started in 2002. I picked up a few of its titles, including Rakan (subtitled “The Lone Warrior”). AK Comics’ motto is “The Only Middle Eastern Superheroes.” In fact, the titles are released in both English and Arabic versions, with availability in North America, Europe, and the Middle East.

Rakan is entertaining and well-paced and features solid art. Fantasy readers—to whom this caters—will be reminded of Robert E. Howard’s Conan in more than one respect, but Rakan’s creators supply plenty of elements that distinguish him from that character.

This series has the potential for higher ratings, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it achieve those heights. Looking for something new in the sword-and-fantasy realm? Give Rakan a try.
