Vince Danks’ Sapphire owes a lot to X-Files: a special team of British operatives formed to deal with cases with supernatural overtones, it’s a paranoid fantasy with innumerable wheels within wheels. Danks’ script itself is more reminiscent of the down to earth British TV thrillers like Callan, although fantasy trappings abound with several characters having visions of the past, psychic wars and demons. The six issues that have appeared so far deal with the fledgling team’s first case, a series of murders that, despite their satanic ritualistic overtones, appear to link into a secret government research project to create mutated humans. Like X-Files there’s a feeling that there are some questions that will never be answered as layer after layer of plot is excavated.

Danks’ art suffers from the stiffness of too much photo-referencing, with some panels tightly and realistically drawn and others betraying wonky bits of perspective or poorly drawn faces. There is some very fine inking (as you’d expect from an ex-inker) but overall it needs to loosen up. The story remains interesting enough, however, to get you past the art’s occasional problems. ~FJ
