Afterlife in Gothland

Maddox MacClarran is a typical twenty-something angry leather-clad pagan Goth who’s thrown into the position of actually having to do something noble. So what happens to him after trying to save the life of his roommate? He wakes up to find himself dead and in the ultimate netherworld known as Purgatory.

The story has an interesting perspective — the entire tale is told from behind the eyes of MacClarran himself, so he’s never actually seen in the issue, at least until near the end. In this nether-realm, he finds himself in the company of his guardian angel (another Goth, of course) as well as several other real-life historical celebrities who have their own reasons for being cast halfway between Heaven and Hell.

Creator Shea Anton Pensa tells a story that’s funny enough, as his non-religious character tries to find justification for his arrival in such a place. Still, the character’s moody whining gets kind of old after a while. The setting of the story requires a minimal amount of background art, but the highlight of the art is Pensa’s caricatures of Purgatory’s other residents. This is for fans of light-hearted supernatural fare.
