This three-issue mini-series introduces Black Web, as well as independent Inks comics. It stars Doctor Derrick Baylor, a scientist involved in research on a universal vaccine using spider venom. Unfortunately, this dedicated scientist didn’t know that the new assistant they had just hired in the lab was actually a spy and saboteur. The spy stole the results of Baylor’s research, then left just as a bomb he had planted exploded. The blast sent needles containing spider venom flying through the air, skewering Baylor.

But instead of being killed, Baylor found himself blessed with strange new powers. His body changed into a dark, vaguely spider-textured form. He found he could climb walls and fly through the air, and he had the ability to throw “webs” from his chest, trapping people in them. Moreover (tip of the hat to Wolverine here), he had single-pronged, retractable claws that appeared from the ends of his hands.
