Alien: The Illustrated Story

 ATIS   (HM Communications, 1979)

and 1979 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

Aboard the refinery spaceship, Nostromo, the crew is awakened from hypersleep by an automated distress call. Compelled to investigate by company policy, the crew discovers an enormous wrecked ship on a small planet and the horrible cargo it carried. By the time the crew realizes that they did not intercept a distress call, but rather a warning, the full treachery of the company they work for will be revealed.

This is the graphic novel adaptation of the original Alien movie that has become a science-fiction classic and the source of a multitude of sequels, both cinematic and illustrated. Writer Archie Goodwin and artist Walt Simonson, who previously collaborated on the classic Manhunter backup feature in Detective Comics #437-#443, do an outstanding job translating the tension and sense of impending doom that was a constant presence in the 1979 Ridley Scott film.
