Wayward Warrior

 WAYW   (Alpha, 1990)

™ and ©1990 Alpha

Two struggling comic book creator types—probably the artist and the writer of this title making cameo appearances in their own book—are at home taking in some late night TV. We being only guests in this house are obligated to watch what these two guys want to watch and what they end up watching is the adventures of…Lance Stanton!!, Wayward Warrior.

Not even going half way into the “episode” one picks up on the fact that the hero…Lance Stanton!!, Wayward Warrior and his action-packed escapades are only spoofs of the over-muscled over-worked super-hero genre. That this title’s creators have poised themselves in the readers’ perspective, threatening repeatedly to “turn off” their own creation, but don’t, suggests a spoofing of fandom as well—a fandom that helped fuel a glut back in the 1980s whose influence in the industry is still felt today.
