The Art of Usagi Yojimbo: 20th Anniversary Edition
(Dark Horse, 2004)
™ and © 1984-2004 Stan Sakai
Usagi Yojimbo has been in print in comics for over twenty years, building a run of more than 140 issues through no less than four different publishers, and his creator Stan Sakai has amassed quite a loyal following with his engaging tales of the samurai bunny that, according to Dark Horse editor Diana Schultz, “cut straight to the human heart.” This big art book celebrates Sakai’s mastery of his craft, reprinting entire stories and collecting cover and pin–up images—some in glorious color and others in beautiful black and white. Interestingly, the volume also includes other artists’—among them Tim Sale (Batman: The Long Halloween), Sergio Aragones (Groo the Wanderer), Paul Chadwick (Concrete), Geof Darrow (Hard Boiled), Peter Laird (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Frank Miller (Sin City), and Jeff Smith (Bone)—interpretations of Usagi.
