During World War II and the years following, great effort was put forth to increase morale and national loyalty. In a time when people everywhere were affected by death and devastation, it was crucial to provide heroic role models. Usually this meant world leaders and other public figures, like Roosevelt, Churchill, and Lou Gehrig, but it was also important to remind people that even ordinary folks just like themselves could perform deeds of heroism and courage.

The Parents’ Magazine Institute published 16 issues of Real Heroes between 1941 and 1946, each with several stories about significant men and women. Every kind of hero was featured: famous explorers and adventurers, contemporary and historical soldiers and world leaders, record-setting sports figures, even stage and screen celebrities. Scattered among the stories of the more famous people, tales of ‘Everyday Heroes’ were spotlighted. Even animals got a few pages of fame.
