Tug & Buster (Art & Soul)

 TBAS   (Art & Soul, 1995-1998)

™ and ©1996 Marc Hempel

From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide:

Mark Hempel’s “lusty, zesty, four-fisted he-man misadventure,” Tug & Buster chronicles the adventures of a pair of misbegotten losers, one a big, quiet lump, the other a gibbering idiot. Most of the humor comes not from situations but from Buster’s incessant chatter, full of sexual innuendo and scatological humor, and which wears thin after a while. Hempel works hard to give it a different visual look to Gregory and Sandman (he’s obviously been studying O’Neill or Muñoz, probably both, and has roughed things up considerably). Like Gregory, Tug & Buster is initially engaging, features repeated jokes and catchphrases that soon become tiresome, suffers from a limited set of scenarios, but contains some brilliant cartooning and visual jokes to offset this. ~FJ
