Batman: War on Crime

 BWOC   (DC, 1999)

™ and ©1999 DC Comics

Following the previous year’s Superman: Peace on Earth, Paul Dini and Alex Ross joined forces again to create another giant-sized masterpiece. Batman: War on Crime explores the roots of crime, drawing a small boy named Marcus into its web, even as his own parents were killed by criminals. Batman, who himself had lost his parents to crime, tries to stop the decay of the bayside district that Marcus calls home. For all his head-busting efforts, the real change comes when he uses the monetary powers of Bruce Wayne to help restore industry and jobs to that dying part of the city. As usual, Dini’s scriptwork is deft, and Alex Ross’s arwork stunning—all the more so for the glossy, oversized format.
