Trashed

Former garbageman turned comics creator Derf proves that some things are just too strange, sick, or funny not to be true. Trashed is a squishy, slimy, smelly exposé of the seldom-mentioned occupation of garbage collecting, based on Derf’s own experiences during his college days. And the reader has to believe that this was written from experience, because even the most imaginative writers in this or any field couldn’t possibly have imagined scenarios as disgusting or hilarious as these.

Paced like a Leslie Nielsen film, Trashed is an aimless but non-stop series of gut-busting (and gut-turning) comical situations. There’s an eye-watering gag in every skanky pile of trash that Derf and his partner have to pick up, clean up, or scrape up, whether it be the compressed garbage bags that explode at inopportune moments or the portajohn that weighs 500 pounds for a very good reason. And Derf’s caricature style art, à la Mike Judge, perfectly compliments the hilarity of the story. The sight gags alone in many panels are priceless.

Rather than cursing, readers will probably chuckle to themselves next time they find themselves stuck in traffic behind a garbage truck. The only downside is that Derf’s trash-collecting days are presumably behind him, so there likely won’t be any more volumes of this graphic novel. Maybe he could take another undesirable job and do a sequel.
