Preacher Special: Saint of Killers

 PSSK   (Vertigo, 1996)

™ and ©1996 DC Comics, Inc.

Just as Saint Joseph is the patron saint of carpenters, and Saint Valentine is the patron saint of lovers, in the violent, gruesome, and sometimes uproarious version of theological dogma that is Garth Ennis’ Preacher, there is a patron saint of killers. He is an unnamed bounty hunter from the American West who sleeps under Boot Hill awaiting the call from the Adephi to go forth and do their bidding.

His origin is told in this four-issue mini-series, a unique mixture of the Western and horror/occult genres. There is a bit of Jonah Hex and Clint Eastwood’s Josey Wales in this tale of a bitter, disillusioned veteran of the Civil War. He came to know peace with a wife and daughter after years of brutality, but this idyllic existence was tragically ended in a series of events that sent him to Hell…and then back.
