Real War Stories

 REWS   (Eclipse, 1987, 1991)

ô and ©1987 Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors

(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

The Department of Defense tried to stop the distribution of Real War Stories #1, published on behalf of the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors. The second issue highlighted the work of Citizen Soldier, an organization dedicated to protecting the civil and human rights of its GI/veteran members. Neither volume is successful as a comic. Both have good writers and artists (Joyce Brabner, Brian Bolland, Steve Leialoha, Bill Sienkiewicz, Paul Mavrides) but only rarely do they attempt anything interesting as far as the form goes. In #1 Alan Moore effectively contrasts an ex-soldierís past and present life, while #2ís highlight is Greg Baisden and Stephen DeStefano using Alice In Wonderland to satirize arguments about the use of military force. This is not to say that the title fails in its objective of expressing the tragedy of war; itís simply that the impulse to teach us this often outweighs artistic considerations. ~NF
