The Big O

 BIG8   (Viz, 2002)

TM and (c) Viz Communications, Inc.

Adapting a TV show into comics form seems to be just as hard for the Japanese as it is for us; most (of the ones we’ve gotten to see, anyway) are just lukewarm rehashes of the source material. But in every respect, The Big O manages to capture the mach cool style of the anime. And it’s a series that’s all about cool and style. From the clothes, cars (Roger Smith’s super–car is sadly absent this issue), and even villain Beck’s soft–ice–cream–swirl pompadour are uniquely visualized.

And, of course, there are the giant robots. The back–up text feature dares to suggest they don’t jibe with the dark, dense milieu of Paradigm City, but, emerging from nowhere, out of the fog, they add an extra surrealistic touch to the proceedings. And the adaptation promises to provide us with something the anime couldn’t: an actual end to the story.
