CELL   (Antarctic, 1996-1997)

™ and ©1997 Derek Kirk

(From the Slings & Arrows Comic Guide)

A very promising debut indeed from Derek Kirk concerning a bleak future in which engineer Annie stops thugs from beating a naked man clutching a mysterious device. Then there’s a sinister corporation, a jealous boyfriend, some excellent dialogue, and a bizarre clown. Kirk is an instinctive storyteller, and his fine-lined art, while perfectly acceptable here, should evolve into something wonderful. #1–3 are more than just promising, though, and it’s very unfortunate that Kirk decided that Cell “was like a premature baby, not ready to come out yet” and stopped the series. Also of note are the confessional backup strips by Kirk’s brother Brent. While far more light hearted and at first drawn functionally rather than elegantly, they all entertain, and his art evolves throughout, eventually attaining a Joe Matt-like fluidity. ~WJ
