Your Angels Speak

Guy Gilchrist’s syndicated feature Your Angels Speak is an awkward fit for the comic-book medium. In this first issue of the series, there are two rectangular, one-panel cartoons (each a reprint) per page, meaning it is necessary to turn the comic book sideways in order to read it. This is done easily enough, of course, but it is hard to take in this type of material in such large doses.

Basically, each entry is a nicely drawn illustration accompanied by a Bible verse or an aphorism of the inspirational variety, and this is not a bad thing, especially in an industry that has more than its share of cynical material. However, such sentiments as “You Are Stronger Than Any Storm You Will Face” and “Greet the Gift of Today with Hope & Gratitude” are much easier to swallow on a day-by-day basis (making the feature an ideal fit for the funny papers).

Cynics will gag on these cartoons, as will those with little patience for “bumper-sticker” dogma. Moreover, for sheer entertainment value, Gilchrist’s Nancy (with the sexy Aunt Fritzi) strip is far preferable. However, if there was ever a comic book to give to your Janette Oke-reading grandmother or Max Lucado-reading uncle, this is it.
