Katy Keene (2nd Series)

Subtitled “The Pinup Queen,” brunette model and actress Katy was created by Bill Woggon as a backup for the Archie title Wilbur, in 1945. Identical to any number of other leggy-girl comedy strips, her gimmick of reader participation catapulted her to stardom and numerous spinoff titles. Readers submitted their suggestions for costumes in the hope of seeing their names in print, designs arrived by the sackful, and Katy Keene has been imitated by hundreds of girl-targeted strips since. Woggon’s ornate and decorative art style apart, Katy’s stories had little to offer, being very lightweight romantic comedies in which she was squired by a succession of doll-like boyfriends. The occasional twist was Katy’s chubby, bespectacled sister throwing a spanner in the works. Yup, Katy made Millie the Model read like Chekhov, in comparison.

Unlike other girl strips, Katy never made even a token concession to the passing years. Her style remained resolutely 1946 right until the bitter end. Her fans knew what they liked, though, and they liked it a lot. Most of the time you could hardly follow the story for captions crediting “contributing designers.” Under the Red Circle imprint, Archie tried to update Katy for the 1980s, but despite some gorgeous artwork from Barb Rausch (a first-generation Katy fan) the series didn’t gel. Reverting to reprints of the classic material with the occasional new strip, the title enjoyed a moderately successful run. ~HS
