Kid-oriented Beetlejuice comics were based on a Saturday morning cartoon series from the early 1990s, which were in turn based on Tim Burton’s masterful horror comedy from 1988. Beetlejuice is a high-spirited ghoul who enjoys using his ghostly powers to frighten ordinary mortals. He meets his match in Lydia, a sarcastic young woman who finds Beetlejuice more ridiculous than scary. The two become fast friends, and BJ delights in taking Lydia on in all manner of supernatural adventures. The concept seemed like a natural hit with the targeted kiddie audience, but apparently not enough to support a comic book series. Harvey’s two efforts to launch Beetlejuice on a four-color career ground to a halt after the first issues.
