Justice League of America: Another Nail

™ and © DC Comics, Inc.

This Elseworld story of the Justice League of America is a follow–up to writer/artist Alan Davis’s first mini–series JLA: The Nail, in which the creator envisioned a world where Superman was not raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent and never took up his heroic mantle. That well–received story is continued here and the new plotline focuses on the newly discovered hero Superman dealing with an alien invasion and the influx of the cosmic New Gods. While the story is interesting and the mysteries behind the appearance of the New Gods intriguing, the real reason to check out this series (and its predecessor) is Davis’s artwork. Joined by regular collaborator and inker Mark Farmer, this is a masterwork of action art. Davis’s renditions of DC icons like Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and the Martian Manhunter rival any in the history of comics. And Davis’s Darkseid is one for the record books!
