The Best of Buster and Funny Monthly

 BOBK   (Fleetway Quality, 1994)

™ and ©1994 Fleetway Editions, Ltd.

Before it folded in 1995, this magazine was home to a collection of gag strips, reprinted from the pages of Buster Fortnightly and Funny. Buster Fortnightly was a standard children’s humor comic, with its lead character getting into all manner of schoolboy trouble. Other characters, like X-Ray Specs (a kid whose eyeglasses let him see through solid objects), would solve crimes, foil frauds, and so forth. The oddest of the bunch was probably Wonder Wellies, whose galoshes (“wellies”) could stretch to ridiculous sizes, or stick to pavement so firmly that the boy became immovable. As a result, he was never seen without them.

The strips from Funny had a slightly more grown-up feel to them, including some oddball—almost alternative comix-type—characters like Faceache. For whatever reasons, neither collection of strips was able to garner this magazine enough readers, and in 1995, it was merged into Fleetway’s new humor compendium, BVC.
